Thursday’s Five Facts

[1] ABQ City Councilor withdraws no-confidence proposal against APD chief – Albuquerque City Councilor Louie Sanchez is withdrawing his no-confidence proposal against Albuquerque Police Department Chief Harold Medina. Sanchez sponsored the vote against Chief Medina alleging mismanagement with APD pointing to the current federal investigation into the department’s DWI unit. He withdrew the resolution after other councilors expressed concerns about the process surrounding a vote like this. The council made a unanimous decision to withdraw.

[2] Feds continue to seize legal pot in New Mexico at checkpoints – Recreational cannabis use is legal in New Mexico, but remains illegal under federal law. New Mexico cannabis businesses say federal agents are seizing their product at checkpoints. The New Mexico Cannabis Chamber of Commerce said in the last two weeks federal agents stopped 12 legal and licensed New Mexico cannabis businesses and seized more than $300,000 worth of product. In a statement U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said marijuana is still classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance under federal law and agents will continue to take appropriate enforcement action against those in possession anywhere in the U.S.

[3] Warm and quiet day before high wind returns – Temperatures will be warmer today, climbing into the 60s, 70s and 80s. Winds will stay light, up to around 25 mph. Skies will be mostly sunny, with high clouds moving in from the west this afternoon and evening. Friday will be warm, cloudier and windy. The winds will be around 35 to 60 mph on Friday, and even higher on Saturday. Rain and snow will move into western and northern New Mexico Friday night through Saturday.

[4] Balloon Fiesta offering a day of free admission for state residents – Launching what it calls “New Mexico Day,” Balloon Fiesta says on Monday, October 7, all state residents can enter the park for free. They’ll just need to bring either a state ID or proof of residency to get in. Residents will still have to pay to park. Balloon Fiesta says depending on turnout this year, they could make this an annual day.

[5] An 8,200-year-old campsite found at Holloman Air Force Base – An ancient campsite buried underground is being unearthed in southern New Mexico. Scientists and the 49th Civil Engineer Squadron are working to uncover the site. “Gomolak Overlook,” seems to have been used over 8,000 years ago, the Air Force says. It was discovered by chance when researchers saw an artifact sticking out of a roadcut. Radiocarbon dating showed the site dates to about 8,200 years ago. The Air Force says 400 archaeological discoveries have been found around the Holloman Air Force Base.
