Locals celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day in SE Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – On Saturday, many residents made their way to southeast Albuquerque to celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day.

The event was held at the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center and was hosted by the Ukrainian Americans of New Mexico and Albuquerque Sister Cities Foundation.

The date marks the 33rd anniversary of when the country gained independence when the Soviet Union fell.

“Independence for each country, means freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of being a human, and in this matter, after 1991, we became independent, and that freedom meant so much for generations of Ukrainians because the fight for freedom has been going on for centuries,” said Ukrainians of New Mexico President Larysa Castillo.

About 100 people made it out to the celebration.
