TAOS, N.M. (KRQE) – A Taos animal shelter has been trying to find a forever home for one of its long term residents. Mia, the shepherd-mixed dog has been at the facility for more than 900 days.
Mia was found as a stray dog in Taos. Not much is known about the life she had before she was rescued but since day one, staff and volunteers at Stray Hearts Animal Shelter have been working with her and slowly making progress. “She’s about 3 1/2 years old and she’s a Shepherd mix, she came in on September 1st of 2021 to our shelter, which as of today was 968 days ago,” said Nik Sorensen, Stray Hearts Animal Shelter Operations Director.

It’s not for lack of trying to find Mia’s forever home as she’s been paired with other dogs in order to make her feel comfortable when meeting new people. Although staff say Mia’s friendly and loves to play. She’s also extremely shy, making it hard to match her with the right family.
“She’s had multiple people ask about her because they see how cute she is on our website,” said Sorensen. “We have had 2 or 3 people try the process of starting those multiple visits with various levels of success and then sometimes you know it doesn’t work out.”
The staff at the shelter hopes that whoever decides to adopt Mia, that they will give her the love and comfort she deserves.
