Romania’s Domiciled Population Declines

The population by domicile on January 1, 2024 reached 21.83 million people, the National Institute of Statistics reported on Friday. INS “counts” two categories of population, the one by domicile and the resident one.

The population by domicile represents the number of people with Romanian citizenship and residence on the territory of Romania, regardless of whether they are in the country or not.
The resident population represents all persons with Romanian citizenship, foreigners and those without citizenship, who have their habitual residence on the territory of Romania. That is, the resident population represents the population that excludes emigrants, but includes immigrants.
The urban population and the female population are in the majority (55.8% and 51.2%, respectively), the report said. The phenomenon of demographic aging has intensified, the elderly population of 65 years and over surpassing by more than 27.5% the young population of 0-14 years (3966 thousand compared to 3110 thousand people).
On January 1, 2024, the population by residence in the urban environment was 12.18 million people, down from January 1, 2023 (1.0%); the one in rural areas was 9.64 million people, a slight increase compared to January 1, 2023 (0.2%). The female population on January 1, 2024 was 11.18 million people, down 0.4% compared to the same date of the previous year; the male population recorded the same evolution, which was 10.65 million people, down 0.5% compared to the same date of the previous year.
The demographic aging process continued in 2023, noting a slight decrease (by 0.3 percentage points) in the share of young people (0-14 years) and at the same time an increase (by 0.4 percentage points) in the share the elderly population (aged 65 and over) in the total population.

The demographic aging index increased from 122.0 on January 1, 2023 to 127.5 elderly people per 100 young people on January 1, 2024. The average age of the population was 42.5 years, 0.3 years higher than on January 1, 2023.

The median age was 43.2 years, increasing by 0.4 years compared to January 1, 2023. Median age is the threshold above which half of the population is older than the median age and the other half is younger. On January 1, 2024, the largest share in the total population was held by the 45-49 age group (8.6%). The same age group had the highest share among both females (8.3%) and males (9.0%).

The share of the 0-4 years group was 4.4%, lower than that of the 5-9 years (4.9%), 10-14 years (5.0%) and 15-19 years ( 5.2%).
