A total solar sclipse is happening on Monday, April 8, 2024. While Southern California won’t be on the path of the total eclipse, it’ll still be an experience.
For Southern California residents, the solar eclipse will start just after 10 a.m. Pacific on Monday, April 8. The eclipse will be at its max around 11:12 a.m. In Southern California, the sun will only be about 50% visible at its peak. The eclipse will conclude around 12:20 p.m.

To view the eclipse, it’s important to have eye protection. While solar eclipse glasses can be purchased online or in stores, many businesses are offering them for free.
Here’s a list of different places you can find them in Southern California.
Los Angeles County
Los Angeles County Public Libary Branches
Those with a library card are able to pick up two pairs of glasses from most branches, with some even offering viewing parties such as the Sylmar Branch, Studio City Branch, Playa Vista Branch and Edendale Branch.
Mount Wilson Observatory
The will stream the eclipse live to its Auditorium. It will be projected in hydrogen alpha, a filter which allows participants to see surface features on the sun.
Griffith Observatory on the other hand is not hosting a public viewing of the Solar Eclipse but will have a live online broadcast.
Pierce College*
The college is hosting a viewing party on the 2nd floor of the Center for the Sciences.
Orange County
Stanton Library
This OC Library branch is giving out free glasses in addition to hosting a viewing party. After the eclipse, they will also be offering a free craft.
Inland Empire
Museum of Riverside
The museum is hosting a viewing party in addition to giving out free glasses on the day.
San Bernardino County Museum*
San Bernardino Valley College is hosting a viewing party at the museum. Set up begins at 9 a.m.
Throughout Southern California
Warby Parker
Starting April 1, 2024, the glasses store will be offering free solar eclipse glasses at all of its locations.
*These events do not mention providing solar eclipse glasses.
