The song marks the official start of Perrie Edwards’ solo career, and she has co-written the song alongside Ed Sheeran, David Hodges (Kelly Clarkson, Chrstina Perri) and Steve Solomon.

She spoke to NME last week about the song, describing it as “anthemic – driving in the car with the roof down in the wind”. Check out the lyric video for ‘Forget About Us’ below:

Perrie has now expanded on her thoughts on the song, which reflects on past relationships. “I look back on past relationships and do think happily about those times,” she has said. “Do I want to be there now? No. It didn’t work out that way and if it was supposed to be it would have happened. Relationships have been a huge part of my life and they’ve made me who I am now. I think it’s a nice sentiment to be honest about and it’s super relatable.”

Perrie confirmed last month that her debut album was complete, and that it would feature collaborations with RAYE and Sheeran. Other details about the album remain scarce, but she has disclosed that her favourite song on the record is one that she wrote about her son Axel.

In her In Conversation interview with NME, she explained how ‘Forget About Us’ came about. “So, Ed [Sheeran] sent me the song and at the time, the lyrics and concept were very direct to what it was about. And I rang him and was like, ‘Would you mind if I just tweaked little bits? I’m not going to just be on the writing credits for the craic because that gives me the ick, I hate when people do that. I don’t want to take away [the fact] you produced and wrote this song [and] sent it to me. I just want to tweak it lyrically so it’s more me and where I’m at in my life now.’”

“And he was totally cool with it, he was so supportive,” he continued. “He was like, ‘I want you to take full ownership in it – whatever you’re not comfortable with, change it, and we’ll work on it from there.’ So I did a session on Zoom and we kind of got it to where it is now. I’m really happy.”

The singer first found fame after winning The X Factor in 2011 as part of the girl group Little Mix. After 11 years together, the members decided to go their separate ways to pursue their own respective careers as solo artists.

Before Little Mix’s hiatus, Jesy Nelson left the group and embarked on her own solo career, releasing the Nicki Minaj-assisted ‘Boyz’ that sparked some online controversy.

The remaining members – Leigh-Ann Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall – have all done a solo project. Pinnock took on an acting role in the Christmas movie Boxing Day, before signing to Warner Records.

Thirlwall then signed a global deal with RCA Records after penning songs for the likes of TWICE (‘First Time’), Iggy Azalea and Britney Spears (‘Pretty Girls’).
